Neil is Distinguished Professor of Archaeology at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. A leading specialist in the Viking Age and the pre-Christian religions of the North, and in the historical archaeology of the Indo-Pacific region, his researches have taken him to more than 40 countries. Neil is a frequent contributor to international archaeological television and radio, and is the historical consultant for History Channel's Real Vikings documentaries, supporting their successful Vikings drama series.
From 2016-2025 he is directing Sweden's largest archaeological research project, The Viking Phenomenon, leading an international team to explore the origins of this critical period in world history. A second long-term project focuses on the multicultural impact of World War II across the island communities of the Pacific.
