Alex Rowell is a journalist and author based in Lebanon, where he has written for publications including the BBC, the Economist, and the Washington Post. A lifelong resident of the Middle East, fluent in Arabic, his first book Vintage Humour: The Islamic Wine Poetry of Abu Nuwas (Hurst, 2017) was named among the best of 2018 by the Evening Standard. He contributed a chapter to Tears of Bacchus: A History of Wine in the Arab World (Gilgamesh, 2020), a collection of essays with a foreword by bestselling wine writer Hugh Johnson.
