Hugh strives to discover pertinent and gripping stories to communicate to a global audience. His numerous features for Oceanographic explore a range of contemporary issues and stories from the oceans, including Issue 13’s investigative cover story into the Russian Navy-trained beluga whale Hvaldimir. His ongoing Stories from the Edge interview series for Sidetracked investigates the motivating factors that inspire leading outdoor athletes, photographers, and explorers to push the limits of human possibility. His writing for National Geographic UK includes stories of redemption for victims of sexual violence as a weapon of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the first winter expedition to free dive with and document sperm whales in Arctic Norway.
In August 2021, Hugh co-led the Jan Mayen 2021 Expedition, a 1,200-nautical-mile scientific communication and storytelling voyage to summit the world’s northernmost active volcano, Mount Beerenberg, on the centenary of its first ascent. He subsequently wrote and produced Tales of Jan Mayen, an award-winning documentary that chronicles the expedition.
With a deep love for the wilderness, Hugh lives in Tromsø, Arctic Norway, with a retired Alaskan Husky sled dog named Gull.
