Michael Economou is a historian and writer specialising in the religion, culture, and societies of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. He holds a PhD in Ancient History from the University of Oxford, where he has also worked as a lecturer and researcher. He has also served as a researcher for UNESCO and other organisations, and currently works as a heritage consultant specialising in the Middle East, collaborating on major projects with archaeologists, museums, government institutions, and international organisations.
He is the author of an academic monograph, Institutions, Ideology, and Power in the Hasmonean State, and research articles in both academic and public-facing publications. He is currently writing his first book for a general audience, which will be published by Oneworld. His work is motivated by a desire to bring less-known parts of the ancient world to life for contemporary audiences, exploring the forgotten people, places, and stories which continue to shape the modern world.
