Rob Drummond is a sociolinguist who researches, teaches, and writes about language and identity. He is a Reader in Linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University, currently completing a large (Ā£700,000) Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project exploring the accents, dialects and identities of people in Greater Manchester. He previously worked on a Leverhulme Trust funded project looking at the speech and identities of young people who had been excluded from mainstream education.
Equally important to Rob is his public-facing work and work with schools. He spends a lot of his time presenting and explaining language-related issues to a public audience, calling for greater awareness and acceptance of linguistic diversity. He regularly contributes to media stories about language, and is often called upon as a language expert for Radio and Television.
