William Han was born in Taiwan, and he was raised there and in New Zealand before receiving his tertiary education in the United States. At Yale University, he studied under the eminent historian of China, Jonathan Spence. After graduating from Columbia Law School, he practiced law at top firms in New York City with a particular focus on multinational clients operating in China. He has also worked as a journalist and essayist, writing for CNN, Vox, TIME Magazine, the South China Morning Post, the Straits Times, Nikkei Asia, and other publications. He also writes screenplays for Hollywood.
An avid traveller, he has spent time in 121 countries and on every continent. In 2022, he published a travelogue, From the Wall to the Water, which chronicled a journey along the Silk Road from China to Italy in the footsteps of an ancient Chinese explorer in search of Rome. He is mindful of that Chinese saying: "When you return from the Five Holy Mountains, you don't want to see any more mountains."
